Will you be takng a vintage Remington deer hunting?

Post by Rickster »

Deer season approaches. Last year's venison fell to a Mo 14 in 25 Rem. I am thinking this year I might go with a Mo 30 in 25 Rem. Or maybe take my chances with Mo 25 in 25-20 or 32-20.

So...will anyone else here be taking a vintage Remington hunting this fall? Or are you all armchair shooters?

All I ever deer hunt with are 721 or 725 in 270 or 3006. Varmints have a little variety, but mostly use 722 222. Elk is a different story, used a M70 338, pre 64 of course. Come to think of it I carried a 722 300Sav for deer one time. Oh and then there was the peep sighted early M54 3006 one time. Success came often to the 721s and 725.

I've been trying some different loads in my 721 300 H & H. So far it shoots pretty good, but I am still looking for that perfect load. My best so far is 65 gr IMR 4350 behind a 180 gr Hdy with 215 primers. I loaded a couple with 67 gr but I haven't tried them yet. I also have not hooked up my chrono so I don't know the velocity yet. I'm not looking for the ultimate in velocity or energy. I will use something smaller (probably my 243 or 280) for deer but would sure like to take an elk with my 55 year old Remington.

I got word today that my brother got another Arizona elk with his bow this morning. He usually does. Not too bad for 73 years old. I went down there to his camp last year. I have never seen so many elk or so much elk sign. He got his after I left last year. Why aren't I putting in for a non-resident tag??? Hmmmmm....

Oh yeah and I can't wait. Got last season's deer with my 1922 Model 8 in .35 Rem. This November I plan on hunting with a 1947 Model 141D in .35 Rem that I just got. Both with open sights too...I'm headin' out to the cabin in WV tomorrow to cut firewood and get ready...good huntin' to all this season!

I wouldnt think a 25-20 or a 32-20 would be treating the deer very fairly. I know every time I would shoot my 25-20 you could actually see the bullet traveling to the target. Not eneough velocity to have proper expansion for a deer size animal. I am NOT saying that they have not been shot and killed easily at sometimes with them so settle down some of you guys, but my opinion its not fair and humane.

I haver a couple of non-Rems (they're lever actions, but I can't remember the brand) in 38-40 & 44-40. The 44-40 carbine might be tempting???

I took the 721 300 H & H to the range yesterday morning. I shot two loads; 65 & 67 grs IMR 4350 behind 180 gr Hdy with 215 primers.
After zeroing in the scope I shot four rounds (two of each). They were all in the 2" white center ring. I haven't put the two loads over my chrono yet to see what velocity difference there is. I was very pleasantly surprised that both loads shot to the same place...

I know a guy who has taken over 100 deer with a 22LR, another who swears by the 25-20, another who has hunted every year for 40 years with a 30-06 except the year he couldn't kill one with a 45-70, and so on. If you make sure the caliber matches your hunting style and skill level....

Well I dont care how good you are a .22 is just plain stupid. Like I said in my previous post I never said they can not be or have not been killed. I would like to hear his good reason for using a .22. Its not impressive.

100 deer with a 22 LR??? There aren't many states that allow more than one deer per season with a rifle. How old is that guy??? If he bagged over 100, how many did he cripple??? In my early days in Michigan it was against game laws to use a 22 LR for deer. I think that's one game law I am in favor of. Sorry, but IMHO there's just no justification for hunting big game with a weak cartridge. A humane kill is more important than saving a few bucks on ammo.

Correct me if Im wrong, but I think in Missouri its against the law to hunt deer with a rimfire. I am sure it would be the same in other states as well. A 25-20 is to small. BOTTOM LINE!. No matter the skill level. Like I said I would like to hear his wonderful reason why he uses a .22. Can you post his picture so we can see what an stupidity looks like?

He is dirt poor living in Alaska. He shoots them behind the ear at close range. Probably not legal, even in Alaska. He is not concerned with the approval of others.

It's hardly vintage but I just picked up a M/7 in 7mm-08. I will put it on the bench on Wednesday to see how it does. I put a 3.5 X 10 Leupold on it. I wanted a short "Jeep gun". Now I have to get a Jeep... :D With the 18 1/2" barrel it's shorter than my Win M/92 saddle ring carbine.

While following this thread, I've been wondering what the definition of "vintage" is. ;)

30, 40, 50 yrs.?
