Last year I purchased a well worn 1894 CEO grade double as a possible project gun. The gun has nice barrels and an interesting aftermarket single trigger, so I thought I would be fun getting it back into shooting condition, but it has some issues. The rib is loose and the engraving on the left and right side of the frame is a little faint and needs refreshing . Additionally, someone installed what appears to be a parker safety on the gun. The engraving on the tang goes under the safety, so I assume the safety was added at a later date. Would you have the safety removed and hole filled, or leave the gun with a working parker safety?
Regards,
Daniel

Re: Model 1894 CEO Pigeon project
I'd be in favor of redoing it to Pigeon Gun specs. The real Remington Pigeon Guns, I've had a chance to look inside, had a stronger head to their stocks because the wood wasn't cut away for the safety mechanism. I've never had a chance to look inside a real Parker Bros. or Ansley H. Fox Pigeon Gun to see how they did it.

Researcher,
Thank you for your reply. I do plan to put it back to it's orginal configuration.
Part of the engraving on the tang is missing where they drilled the hole for the saftey. I plan to have the hole filed and the engraving restored. Does anyone have a picture of an unaltered tang?
Regards,
Daniel

You need to check out Charles G. Semmer's book "Remington Double Shotguns." It is available from the author 7885 Cyd Drive, Denver, CO 80221, for $60 plus $5 shipping and handling. It is invaluable if you are going to shoot, invest, collect or play in the Remington double gun field. Remington supplied a number of different pattern Damascus barrels on these old doubles. A picture of their salesman’s sample of the various styles of Damascus available is shown on page 275 of Semmer's book. There are several pictures of the bare top tang of Remington Pigeon Guns in the book.

Thanks again for your reply Researcher. BTW, I posted pictures of my double on the Double Gun Forum about a year or so ago. I believe it may have been you that pointed out it had a "fancy" saftey that did not belong....
On a different note, who would you have fill the hole drilled for the saftey? Also, who would you have refresh the side engraving on the frame and restore the engraving over the saftey hole?
Regards,
Daniel
