Model 14 rear sight?
Hi All, I have a mint condition model 14 that was manufactured in early 1921. It has the smooth crescent buttplate and is stamped 14A on the barrel. My question is it also has the leaf type rear sight (model 701 1/2?) and not the wheel type sight. It looks original, but for this time frame should it have the wheel type sight? Thanks!

The 701-1/2 replaced the "Wheel Sight" in 1927 at which time they also started putting the higher front sight on. I don't think I would worry about it! I might suggest that you invest in a copy of Ken Blauch's book that covers just about any question you might need to ask in the future along with being a "great" piece of reference material.

Thanks for the reply! I did buy the book and it is a great referance but there are a few things that I think aren't completely correct such as the rear sight issue. We all know the model 14's seem to fall in a category of there own when it comes to options and datelines. Thanks!

Saying that Model 14's are in a category of their own is an understatement. Ken's book is probably the most remarkable
accumulation on information we will ever see in our lifetime on the Model 14. It was just pointed out to me that the 701-1/2 sight is in the 1923 catalog but "probably" was not be used as the standard rear sight at that time.
In response to the chap from Ontario, only the first 4,000 or so Model 141's had the dovetail/slot combination utilizing Model 14 22" barrels. They then went to an "interim" barrel that still had the boss for the magazine ring and then went to the 24" barrel with just the standard dovetail.
I have written a commentary on "parts" and the countless variations that are involved with the Model 14. I will state emphatically "that no two are identical". You might think you have two that "seem" identical but when you start looking at the guts and countless internal modifications, you will find differences.
I work on and repair Model 14's only (some 141's) every day. I continue to be amazed at what you will find in the way of factory modifications and some startling home gunsmithing remedies, the best and most entertaining come from "down under".
With respect to the 701-1/2 sight I have several different varieties in my parts drawer (not including the 93-1/2 that looks like a 701-1/2 but isn't). The early 701-1/2's have an elevator that is .080 in width, the later ones use an elevator that is .060.
Having trouble finding an early (.080) elevator I have a solution for you, it is the same as a Remington #1 (can you believe that)and a chap by the name of Kenn Womack in Garden Valley, CA
makes duplicates for $10.
