Model 12A

I have someone in another forum asking about some info and value on a model 12A pump-action .22 rifle. He said:

1. Remington Pump .22 cal.
model 12?
short, long or long rifle
Patents 1909,1910,1911
Possible serial number R W 13.8414


The "R" and the "W" lead me to believe that it was produced in 11/1972. Although, the year code listing I have only goes back to 1930. If I go back two more years (to "W") would it be a 11/1928 instead of 1972? Someone else said that the Blue Book said that gun was produced from 1909 to 1936.

Anyone one got any idea on this confusion? Thanks.

The Model 12 was made 1909-1936. About 800,000 were produced. So do the math, 138,xxx was made 1910-1920. The gun was made before date coding started, it has no date code. The RW is not a date code. it is the symbol that was used during design and development to identify the gun before it was named a Model 12. Later guns do not have the RW. I am not sure when it was dropped, probably when they moved the s/n to the side of the receiver.

The letters "RW" stood for Remington Works. It was stamped above the serial # from the beginning (1909) until mid-1924. It was dropped when the serial # was moved to the side of the receiver. The date code (post 1921) was on the left side of the barrel just ahead of the receiver, not on the bottom of the receiver.

I just re-read your original question. If you have serial #138,414, it was made in 1914.

I have just inherited a Model 12 from my father. The serial number is in 793XXX range. Can anyone provide the possible manufacture date?

Also I rember my Dad stating he bought the rifle at a pawn shop in the early 60's for $25. In the mid 80's he and I refinished the stock (someone had carved their initials in it) and had the barrel and receiver re-blued. I know this takes away from the value but does any idea how the value is of it.
I will never sell it, I just would like to know.

According to Remington records, you Model 12 was made in 1930. There should be a barrel code on the left side of the barrel, just ahead of the receiver. The last letter in that code should be a "Y". If it a "X" or "Z" add or subtract a year. Sometimes the factory production records were not totally accurate.

After the sanding and rebluing the gun's resale value is as a shooter; probably in the $100-$200 range. I realize that the real value to you is as a keepsake. Enjoy...
