Misfire

Post by CWarmouth »

Hello All,

Today while shooting my 25 Remington (Model 14) I had a misfire. After waiting a few minutes I ejected the cartridge and later put it in a 5 gallon bucket of dirt where it remains right now. Now with 25 Remington being hard to get, I'd like to salvage this. Any advice on how to safely handle this thing? I have an inertia puller but am not too crazy about using it on this for fear of a hangfire type situation. I hear mixed reports on soaking in WD-40, etc. Anybody have experience with this?

Thanks.

Thanks Tbury. You have shed a lot of light on this subject for me. To be honest, I didn't know if it was even safe to HANDLE the thing, much less whack it in an inertia puller or go sawing on it.

The dent looks fine to me, so maybe the primer was a dud. This round was the first one I took out of the box, so I think I'll play it safe and pull them all and reload. I was going to do that in the first place and decided not to after I got shooting.
Last night I put the round in a ziplock bag and submersed it in wd40 just to be on the safe side. I weighed it before I put it in. I'll weigh it again in a few days to see if the wd40 has penetrated the case. I'll feel better if it has.

Thanks again.

An alternative to using an inertial puller is to put the loaded round in the shell holder of your press with no die mounted. Run the press up until the bullet sticks out the top (where the die would be). Grab hold of the bullet with a pair of cheap wire stripper/crimper pliers. The stripper teeth do a good job of gripping bullets. Then run the press back down such that the pliers hit on the part of the press that the die screws into. Hope that makes some sense.
