SA NEEDS HELP

Post by CALIBRE44 »

Have a 75 SA that has a problen. Seens that upon cocking the bolt is engaging early and is in position at half cock, not allowing for free rotation to load..

I don't have an orignal 75 but 2 reprocuctions.
They are similar in the way they work so
it sounds like either the bolt arm is wore or the cam [whitch is on the hammer] is wore.
Letting the bolt ingage or drop over the cam before it should.
Others can probably answer this better then I did.
But it sound like that is what it is doing.
The fix would be a very competent gunsmith if you can't do the repair
your self. In my repos I can just replace the part.
Hope you get it fixed.

Doc, Thanks for your reply. Fixed her! Went back in and found the cam on the hammer was low and slipping off the bolt. Punched it out just enough to keep the bolt from falling early. Works like new. Thanks again......Jim

Have you shot this gun.
If so how does it shoot.
It sound like it's an origanl and should be shot with black powder.
I have some black powder load and bullet sugestion that work well for me.
Also what cal. is it.
Let us know.

Doc; No I have not shot it..I'm a little confused about the cal. Marked "44" only on grip, if it is 44 Remington and not 44-40, what would be the proper brass for re-loads? Head diameter? I am assuming the 3 digit serial # is a batch number, not serial #, so this could be an late ( after 16000 serial numbered guns ) early one? But they had there own reasons for batch #'s??? not serial #'s like the rest of the world..Keep in touch, might consider one of the repro's like you shoot.....Jim

You might run another post just for the cal.

Hi 44.
Mine are .45 colt cal. with 5 1/2" barrels. They shoot very well but you do have to do some smoothing of the action when you get them.
Looking back I wish I would have gotten them in 44-40 with 7" barrels.
They do have a problem with breaking hand springs. Not a problem to replace. I've replaced both of mine once and haven't had a problem since.
Another thing is the repos have the base pin retainer like the colts [on the frame] and they should have them out
on the end towards the muzzle like what should be on your original. But what can you do, thats all thats avalable.
Let me know what you decide.

They do make a .357 or did and most pepole shot 38 special in them.
There is only one manufacturer at present, Uberti. Just different importers.

If it's a 44 Remington (vs a 44-40 aka .44 Winchester) you can slip a US nickel between the cylinder and the frame.

Thanks David; Grips clearly marked "44" only, that being said, the cylinder space mikes at about .065..Does this conferm 44-40? Jim

I'm interested in what the cal. is. I'm not familar with the .44 remington cal.
I am probably wrong but I thought some of the origanals where chambered in .46 remington.
