I'm not at all up on Model 17s, but from what I've read they were introduced in 1921. The company name was changed from Remington Arms - Union Metallic Cartridge Co. to Remington Arms Co., Inc. in 1920. So, I'd think they should all be after UMC?!? Maybe they made up a bunch of receivers before the company name changed?
I have four Remington Arms Co., Inc. catalogues from the period the Model 17 was offered, and they all show the 28-inch barrel as standard with the option of 26-, 30- or 32-inch. There was the option of a solid rib, but the catalogues all state "not offered with ventilated rib."

Re: model 17 questions
I have a list from Remington of s/n ranges for Model 17's. Mine was made in 1927. A s/n of 25xxx would have been made in 1923 and there were 6962 made that year according to my list. It also states that the first s/n is assumed to be 1,000. First production was in 1920 but there are no s/n listed as only 2 were producted. A s/n in the 1500 range would have been producted early in 1921, there were 9075 producted that year. If you have questions about s/n for Model 17's contact me at JimJGS11759s@aol.com
Re: model 17 questions
New Member - I have, what appears to be a very early Model 17. It is marked "The Remington Arms Union Metallic Cartridge Co Inc" Model 17 (top of barrel) with low 4 digit serial number (21xx) and no reciever side markings. patent date June 15, 1915 with B0 above the serial number. It is marked "FULL" on the left site of the barrel above the SN with a small "sun" stamp near the reciever. It also has a "REP" stamp in an oval with a small circle below (or partial - appears to be offcenter stamping) It appears to have the 28 inch barrel (measured 27" from barrel end to reciever - not disasembled yet) It also has a "REMINGTON UMC" buttplate.
I have reviewed other posts and have found bits and pieces of info but nothing definitive on date. Some of the info seems to indicate the very early ones may be impossible to accurately date.
Condition - Still fully functional but well used. Appears to be all original and NO restoration attempts.
Trying to determine manufacture date and value.
Any help would be appreciated
