model 29 information request

Post by tarheel »

I recently aquired a model 29. The manufacture date is Sept. 1929. I am having trouble finding any information about this model. Can anyone tell me where I might look?

Thanks ChuckD
I had stumbled into that info yesterday while checking the Remington site. The last remington search that I did was a few years ago when I was given an old model 12. I found a lot of info about the little 22 that was very helpful. This 29 is only the second remington I have ever owned. I usually collect C&R military weapons. I like to find out the stories behind any weapon I pick up. The 29 interested me with the bottom eject. It's a nice classy old shotgun. I would like to know which grade it is. There is nothing special other than the stock and forearm have nice checkering but I don't know if it is the standard model or what. Thanks again . I will put that site in my favorites.

Thanks remroc
I Thought it may be that model. At any rate the old shotgun is in very good condition. I did do a major refinish on the stock because of some major scratches. I did that the same way you refurbish a military stock, no sanding, just a light scraping to remove the top finish. It looked like it had a shelac finish so I recoated it with my standard "Bull's Eye Gold", two coats. It gives the old wood some new life. I finish it with a light buffing with 0000 wool to take the shine off and it looks great.
The full choke 30" barrel is in excellent shape, shiney as new on the bore. Blueing at about 80-85% with most wear at the slide on the tube. The reciever has a slight brownish patina with a few scratches around the ejection slot.
I had a bag of old Whiteline buttpads on the shelf. I thought I would install one of those to replace the original Remington buttplate. The stock was too large for anything in my bag so I decided to make one. I took an old piece of tan buckskin and cut pieces to fit, sewed them together and laced it on with a leather lace. I antiqued it with some brown shoe polish. Looks great and very functional without taking away from the originality of the gun. As a C&R collector I usually refurbish all my acquisitions if needed. Especially if they are not particularly valuable like this one.
I haven't had a chance to go shoot her yet. Looking forward to that. But most of all I like to know as much as possible about the piece's history as I can find out. Again, thanks for your input.
