remington alloy receivers

Post by ltriker »

some of my 870's have steel receivers(Wingmaster) and some have alloy (Express)...

WHEN did Remington start this and what models are steel and what are alloy?

They are all steel. Get a mangnet. They just look different. Remington has not made an alloy receiver since the model 11-96 Eurolightweight.
What could have happened... did.

Where does the 31L fit timewise versus the 11-96?

The Aeromet receivered Model 31s were offered from 1941 to 1950 (except for a period of international unpleasantness) when the Model 870 Wingmaster displaced the finest pump gun ever made.

Agree about the M31. I still use my Dad's solid rib 31 as my duck gun, and I have a 31L 20 gauge which is my wet weather grouse gun
What is an 11-96?

If you use Google, you'll find some more info.

Interesting that that Remington page says it was introduced in 1996. I don't find it at all mentioned in the 1996 Remington catalogue. It does get a couple of lines in the 1997 catalogue's Shotgun Specifications on page 28. It is finally pictured in the 1998 Remington Catalogue. Looks like the attempted to make it as ungraceful looking as a Beretta autoloader --

The text says the 11-96 has a steel receiver. Those who voted it shotgun of the year must not have known much about shotguns, as it only lasted a max of four years!! Guess that will make it a valuable collector's item on down the road!!!

Check your '97 catalog again......bottom of page 17. It has the "NEW!" diamond with a picture of the 11-96 Euro there. I looked through my '97 catalog this morning and found it (in addition to the info on page 28).

Yeah, another one of Remington's "Limited Editions" that apparently didn't sell very well.
They've had lots and lots of those.

The 31L 20 gauge I have has a crack in the lower front part of the receiver, between the magazine tube and the bottom port. I am told this was a common occurance on these guns. Anyone else ever see the problem?

I'd bet that half of the Model 31Ls I've seen in pawn shops and gun stores have that crack.

My bad!! The Model 11-96 is shown on the bottom fifth of page 17 in the 1997 Remington catalogue. They didn't exactly make a big splash with it.

I have a 16 ga. and a 20 ga. in the model 31 that the reciver's were made from aluninum. I was told that they did this during WW 2 to save on steel. I would pick the 31 as the best pump ever made.
