RRB pistol: is it real, reproduction or???

Post by d.buckeyes »

:?: I recently acquired a pistol that I am trying to correctly identify. It is a single shot RRB with a 10" barrell that is less than half octagonal. The top of the barrell is lightly stamped with "REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION NY". The bottom of the barrell has "32 S&W". Also on the bottom of the barrell, but underneath the non checkered forearm grip is "63".The left, front side of the receiver has six short lines that appear to have months and dates. I can read a few items. they are "DEC" twice, "JUNE" once but the others I cannot read. There is a trigger guard, the barrell is rifled, and the grip is not checkered. There are no other visible markings that I can identify on the wood or metal. Is this an appropriate website to inquire about this and gather more info to identify this as original or reproduction? If so, I'll be glad to post pictures. Thanks for your time and input. Dave :)

Maybe a 1901 target model? The guns of Remington p. 146 shows a Model 1891 with a Navy frame in .32 S&W that seems to look like what you describe.

I went to the Gunsmith today and he confirmed this is original and not a reproduction. It is an 1891 32 S&W centerfire Target RRB pistol that has been blued at somepoint. The riflings are in good condition, it has the sliding extractor, it is stamped with the following patent info: May 3rd 1864, may 7th, June 11th, Nov 12th, Dec 24th, Dec 1st 1872 and Sept 9th 1873. If I join the RSA to continue to research this, will that provide access to information resources to try and identify the manufacture date, how many 32 S&W versions were made, did someone special order this, etc....? Thanks, Dave
