#1 Rolling Block in 43 spanish

Post by Duane »

I have a rolling block in 43 spanish and would like some history on it.
The barrel is 20 1/2 inc with a short forend and only one barrel band.
The upper tang has three lines of text,,Remingtons. Ilion N.Y. U.S.A.
Pat. May 7 --- May7. June 11 Nov 12 Dec 24 1872
Dec 31 1872 ------8 18-3 ------- March---8--
The only numbers I can find are on the left side of the upper tang, G61912
and the left side of the triger guard,12608, and on the butt plate, a large D and 52775.
Overall the finish is poor, but mechanicaly it is solid. Any information is helpfull.

.43 caliber carbine

Post by ehull »

It sounds as if you have a standard Remington "rolling block" carbine in .43 Spanish caliber. Thousands were exported between 1869 and 1900, to a long list of Carribean, and Central and South American countries. If the barrel is part octagonal near the frame, it is the Argentine Modelo 1879. If the breech block is concave where it fits under the barrel, it is an early (pre 1871) type. If there is a frame projection over the butt and forestocks, to better hold the stocks in place, then it is a post 1879 version.
