Model 14 First Kill in 50+ Years

Post by CWarmouth »

Hey Folks,

Last week I took my old Model 14 .35 Remington hunting. This gun is a family heirloom and it was shot for the first time in 50+ years on New Years Day, 2009.

Anyway, at 7:30 AM a nice doe showed up. After about 10 minutes she offered a broadside shot @ 45 yards. The bullet went through both front shoulders, right in the exact spot the bead was floating. There was a blood trail a foot wide. Even so she went about 75 yards.

The best part of this hunt was carving a notch in the stock in the area where my great-uncle had carved three notches before me for deer he had killed.

Just thought I'd share.

Very impressive. I wish my 14-.35 had the history yours has. Great hunt, congratulations.

Thanks. Believe me, I appreciate the history of this gun. My great uncle was the original owner and his initials are carved in the foregrip and the bottom of the pistol grip on the stock. He also, as I said earlier, carved notches in the stock for deer he killed. Neat character. When he died, my grandmother got the gun. When she died, my dad got the gun. When he died, I got the gun. Hopefully my son will get it (in a long time from now!) and he'll continue to keep it in the family.

My dad used a M/14 in 30 Rem in Northern Michigan for many years up until the 60s. He would lengthen one of the grooves in the fore arm for each white tail he shot.
