Sling Swivels

Hey Folks,

I am trying to decide if I should put sling swivels and a sling on my 1932 Model 14 .35 Remington. The gun is in good condition, all original. I do not care that much about collectible value, but I do want to hunt with it a lot and to be able to safely hoist up into a tree stand.

Is it blasphemy to consider this? Are there period correct slings and swivels that would compliment the gun? Is there a sling that I can attach without swivels that won't jam in the receiver tube yet still provide stability for bracing during the shot?

Any advice is appreciated.

In looking at the posts on the forum today, you certainly have a lot of Model 14 issues.

I try to maintain an inventory of all M14 parts including magazine rings, some of which have been made for or altered to accept a sling swivel. During the past few years all the magazine rings I obtained from Numrich had a built in swivel.............well it doesn't swivel but rather moves forward/backward and will accept a 1" sling nicely. This will require the dis-assembly of the gun, removal of the existing magazine ring, and replacing it with the swivel version.

You can always buy one of the icky looking Uncle Mike's that clamps over the magazine ring while looking somewhat ugly in the process but it is an easy installation. You then only have to drill a hole in a 70-90 year old piece of wood and affix the back swivel to the stock. If you are lucky and have a stock with a semi-crescent buttplate that will have a tang on the bottom of the stock you can use the screw-hole for the buttplate to attach the rear swivel.

The front swivels that I obtain from Numrich fit the dovetail nicely......ooops, you do know that the magazine ring dovetail rotates out rather than driven out. Good luck and best regards!

Jim, thanks for the info. As luck would have it I do have the semi-crescent buttplate. Using that screw hole is a good idea.

I called Numrich and talked to them about the magazine ring. They did not have any with swivels but they had ONE with a swivel stud. I got it.

The info about rotating the dovetail is good to know too. I can't figure out quite how that works but I'll pass that info along to my gunsmith. I surely would have thought that it gets tapped out.

I also ordered the Uncle Mike's magazine ring. I'll use that to get me through hunting season (Jan 31 here in Alabama) then get the other ring installed for a more permanent solution.

Like I said there are a "lot" of magazine rings that have had
some sort of modification to them to accept a swivel. If your gunsmith is "competent" he should recognize that it is a rotating dovetail, my method of removing them is to use an extension for a 1/2" drive from a socket set (Craftsman) and rotate it either way. The extension fits without much play in it and gives you considerable leverage to get it out.

I am more worried about your "smith" figuring out how to take the action apart and get it back together.....LOL! Let me know how it works out.

Why wouldn't you just use a barrel band swivel? (that look like some variation of these)

Den, Those are the "Uncle Mike's" parts that I am talking about. I'll be using those until deer season is over. Then going with the more authentic looking magazine ring.

Jim, The gunsmith is one in Atlanta that specializes in restoring antique guns. He is kind of THE gunsmith in the area. When other gunsmiths get stuck, they send the gun to him. He has M14 experience. I'm going to get my M14 reblued in February by him so I'll have him do the ring then.

I was under the impression that everyone was suggesting that the swivels be attached to the magazine tube...... These would clamp on the barrel and consequently not damage the magazine tube.
