Sportsman 12 ga. Skeet
Sportsman 12 ga. Skeet
My stepmom just gave me a Sportsman 12 ga. Skeet. (Serial number on barrel and receiver is 510430) Date code on barrel is A F X...should be March '37. Anyway, it has an interesting muzzle brake on it that I'm not sure if it's aftermarket or did it come from the factory like that? The whole thing is 7" long, made by Lyman with the "Cutts" logo in the middle, has 12 gas "slits" in both the top and bottom, held on by two screws, stamped with "#2LR680" on the end. I'd love to know how to get a photo of this on the forum, but I'm not too good with computers. Furthermore, could anyone comment on this shotgun as to the performance and value? Thanks much!

Sounds like a Cutts Compensator and, far from skeet, that #2LR680 sounds like a "number two long range 0.680" diameter choke tube. That's a very tight choke in case you didn't know. You can still find the Lyman/Cutts choke tubes in the various constrictions.
You can still get an Owner's Manual from Remington, and I encourage you to do so. I am no Model 11 expert, but I know they can be plenty reliable if properly taken care of. To get an idea of value, check Gunbroker or GunsAmerica.

What could have happened... did.

Re: Sportsman 12 ga. Skeet
The Cutts Compensator with the spreader tube was very popular on skeet guns from the 1930s to the 1950s. I was just looking at a Remington Model 31 Skeet with a Cutts this weekend, but was having no luck getting the owner to part with it. I first find the offering of a factory-fitted Cutts Compensator in my Febuary 15, 1939, Remington Dealer's Price List, where it says they will be available after April 15. If there is no choke marking on the barrel back near the breech on the left side the Cutts was likely factory fitted, as the Model 31 I was looking at. If the barrel shows its original choke markings the the Cutts was likely fitted after market.
