I tried to use the barrel stampings for both my Model 12 and my Model 11.
Model 12 barrel stamp is EW, as I read the BLACKPOWDERX chart I get Oct. 1928, there is where my confusion, or misinterpretation of the chart come in.

Model 11 barrel stamp is PB3 I AY PZ3, I understand it is common to have a replacement barrel for shotguns.
This is serial # 36841X

The date codes ussually followed by a 3 are date codes of when they were sent back to the factory for repair.

The letters you are reading on the M/12 are not a barrel code since Remington did not use one until 1921. The exception would be if the gun was returned to the factory for work as explained by Rem600

So, any Model 12 without letters should be pre 1921? I have a Model 12 (my dad's) with a serial number in the 729000's and I have been trying to determine when it was made.

Well any barrel, that's 1928 I would say it's likely the barrel is not original to the gun.

That should be near 1928 and it should have a barrel code.

I can confirm John Gyde's post as my 12 C has serial number 72904X and has the date code of A W, which should be March of 1928.
