Just put my first firearm on layaway. It's an 870 Police model (parkerized). It's mainly for home defense. After lots of research, it seemed that this was the shotgun for me since I didn't want a 'starter' gun that I'd probably want to upgrade later.
I have a couple of kids in the house, so over penetration is a concern for me (the main reason I went with a shotgun instead of a revolver). What's a good round that doesn't have too much scatter or penetration? I plan on testing some out at the range. But just thought it would be good to get a starting point since I'm sure many of you have experience with this gun.
Thanks in advance.

You can probably get 50 opinions if you ask 50 people, but I like #4 Buck. You need to think ahead, and plan lines of fire etc. There is always the chance that any lethal round may penetrate more than you want it to, but with something smaller and soft like #4 buck you do cut way down on ricochet and deflection potential.

Maybe even 51, someone is surely going to change their mind
I keep low recoil 00 buck, 8 or 9 pellet. I think #4 is also fine unless you have real long hallways but I think low recoil is a must.
