Remington m1861 Navy, late?

Post by Swede68 »

I choose to post this in a separate thread in the hope that it will atract some attention.

I have recently aquired a Remington m1861 Old Model Navy. The serialnumber is 21249, the gun is correctly numbered throughout, it has the correct barreladress for an Old Model and the german silver cone frontsight. The loadinglever has the correct cutout for an Old Model. However, the cylinderaxle is of the m1863 type, and the serialnumber seems to suggest that the gun was manufactured in 1863. Is this a transitional gun? Is there any chance that the New Model loadinglever is correct (it matches the patina perfectly), or is it a replacement to make sure that it doesn´t slide forward and lock up the gun during fire?

Does anyone have a picture of the cylinderaxle of the 61 Navy? (closeup of the "head" from different angles if possible). If the axle that is in my gun now is a replacement from a NM I´d like to get a correct axle for the gun. I have a spare (newly made) cylinder axle for a Remington Navy, and I am considering turning it to something that more closely resembles the original axle. But I do not want to do anything to the axle that is on the gun now, since it is clearly antique even if it wasn´t on the gun to begin with.

To sum it up, the question is twofold:
1. Is the serial# on my gun extremely late for an Old Model (When did they stop making them?)?
2. Is it likely that the gun was originally made as a transitional model with the Old Model barrel (including adress), old model loadinglever but New Model axle?

Best regards!
