I bought a Remington Model 24

Post by AkRay »

I found this rifle this morning on a local internet board. The ad said "intact but rough" when describing the rifle's condition. When I went to look at the guy's rifle, I immediately noticed 4 holes drilled on the left side of the receiver. I assume these were someone's attempt to mount a scope. The rifle also has a ring 3 or 4 inches from the end of the barrel where someone stuck a bullet in it, or stuck the end of the barrel under water and then fired it. This is one of the first barrels I've seen that's had a ring in it. The stock seems to fit pretty good, although with handling it's gotten a little looser today. The bluing is what one might expect on a food providing tool that went through this country's depression years. Of course, the way things are going these days, it might get to go through another depression.

This one is also a takedown model, and has the interrupted thread feature to accomplish this. This rifle is a 70+ year old rimfire, and there is a noticeable looseness between the barrel and the receiver. Is there any way to tighten the barrel to the receiver? I've tightened the knurled ring finger tight, but there's still some looseness there.

I did shoot the rifle and it cycles and ejects with high speed bulk ammo. I experienced some hangups while shooting, but they were easy to clear. Surprisingly to me, considering the ring in the barrel and the looseness, it also seems to be very accurate and it shoots to the sights. Part of this must be due to the trigger being exceptionally good, having a light and crisp let off.

This rifle is a semi-automatic chambered for 22 long rifle, and it was designed by the great John M. Browning. It's light and trim, and doesn't have any extra steel or wood to deal with. My 10/22 now has a lousy trigger and feels as handy and whippy as a 2x4 when compared to this Remington Model 24. I'm going to play around with this one for a while longer, but even with the faults I've described, it is a nice rifle and I like it. I paid $50.00 for it today, and so far, I consider it to be money well spent.

I know I have a 12 schematic stashed around here somewhere and I should look up the right name so I don't sound like a nimnod but :D ...

There's a small piece in the take down that fits into the channel in the receiver that's often lost, is that there?

Ah found part name - Barrel Take-Up Lock

I believe this is part no 70450 from Numrich.

As far as I know, it isn't missing any parts. The little part that fits between the receiver and barrel is there. I've been shooting subsonic ammo through it. It's not quite powerful enough to cycle the action, but it works good enough.
