I just bought a Remington 5501 and was wanting to know the age and approximate value of the rifle. On the left side of the barrel is the letter M followed by 45.

That would be a 550-1. You need to check the date code closer, then compare what you find to Manufacture dates on the home page. "M" might be part of the date code. It would mean 1965. The 550-1 was made from 1946 to 1971. Value depends on condition. Please check the BLUE BOOK OF GUN VALUES for value. We don't attempt to guess on values without knowing the condition of the rifle nor if parts have been changed, etc.
