Model 1903 Barrel and caliber question
Model 1903 Barrel and caliber question
I have accquired a rifle with a Springfield 03 receiver and a Remington Arms military Barrel stamped 8-44. It is set up for target shooting. There are no caliber markings on the barrel. I just assumed it was a 30.06. It will not chamber a 30.06, 308, or 270. It will chamber a 7x57 though. Did Remington sell barrel blanks after the war? How can I find the actual caliber of this rifle? Thank you.
Re: Model 1903 Barrel and caliber question
For every 1903A3 made, the government required a certain number of spare parts for those rifles also. There's a butt load of 1943 and 1944 replacement barrels floating around these days, in fact I just rebarreled a 1903A3 the other day with a 4-44 replacement barrel. Your barrel was originally chambered in 30/06, but who knows what has happened to it over the past 65 years. Have a gunsmith do a chamber cast and that should get you on the right road. Please don't guess.
