Rem.1882 SxS Hammer

Post by Badman »

I have a Rem.12 ga. shotgun I believe to be a 1882 Grade 4 according to my Blue Book. It is serial # 3978 and all numbers match(frame,forend,etc.).Under the forend the barrels have a HP mark and a #2 on each, and the number 62 where the forend catch is. It has a steel buttplate, I believe Damascus barrels and they are 30" in length. All screws are engraved and indexed and frame is case-colored. It has double triggers and a checkered pistol grip stock and forend.Light scroll engraving on reciever, trigger guard, hammers, and some on top of barrels near breach. It is in very nice condition for its age and locks up tight and functions correctly. Some minor dings on stock and nice patina on metal.Only flaw is that hammer screw on right side has been replaced and is not correct(flat,no engaving). Trying to get an idea of it's worth and if it is an 1882 grade 4. I tried to upload pics but file is to large. Any place.person,or group I can send pics to get a positive ID and value? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

I suggest you get a copy of Chariy Semmer's book on Remington Shotguns (see home page this site) He explains and pictures what you want to know. Jay Huber RSA

For the record, resizing photos is pretty trivial. If you don't have or want to pay for photoshop, GIMP will do it for free.

I looked at pics in Charles Semmers book and found that this shotgun seems to be a Grade 4 because it has the steel buttplate but has more engraving like a Grade 5 or 6, with the flowered hammer screws and the scrolling around the barrel hinge pin. All the screws are indexed "north-south" so I don't believe the buttplate has been changed. Looks like a Grade 4 with extras. I also used a bore guage and found the right barrel to be Modified and the left Improved Cyl. Any comments?
