Model 870 Wingmaster

Post by wildbill25 »

Hello all.....I'm new to this forum and looking for some help. I recently purchased a Model 870 Wingmaster in excellent original condition. The serial number is S436434V and I'm hoping someone can tell me the year of manufacture or direct me to where I can find it. Also, I was told that the barrels of some Wingmasters were recalled some time ago, and I'd also be interested in any information relative to that. Thank you for any help.

Yours is between 1968 and 1974 according to that serial number. Opinions vary, but I would say you have one of the best they ever made. You can check dates on this site.

I forget the details on the barrel issue, but it was much later than yours. Late '80s I am thinking, but not sure. I'm also not sure Remington ever recalled any barrels, or admitted any wrong doing, but the controversy, if you want to call it that, had to do with when they went to the larger and deeper rollmarking on their firearms. It seems where they were doing it on the barrels was supposedly in the area of highest pressure and there was some concern. I know they did change the location of the rollmarking. I had one of the 'suspect' barrels, and it had been backbored out to 0.745", and had the forcing cone seriously lengthened, and had digested who knows how many pile driver loads, so I figured it was another lawyer get rich scheme. I got something from Remington where I could have gotten some money if I recall, and I threw it in the trash. There was also something about rifle barrels, but that didn't impact me at all, so I don't know a thing about that one.
What could have happened... did.

Thank you Virginian. You've been a world of help and also eased my mind about the barrel issue. Have a great day.
