I recently bought a used 572BDL that was produced in 1969, according to some quick research on the barrel code. I intend to shoot the gun quite a bit as a plinker at the range, and after a good cleaning and inspection I decided to order some replacement parts online (Midway USA). Mostly screws (the heads were quite worn and nearly stripped), a magazine tube, and most importantly, a new front sight. Apparently the front sight had been replaced once, with some no-name blade sight not designed for the gun. My first time at the range it was shooting 18" low at 25 yards, AFTER I'd adjusted the rear elevation all the way up and ran out of adjustment.
Midway delivered my parts very quickly - and I got to work on the front sight. Took the old one off easily, and then discovered that the front sight screws that I ordered are indeed a completely different diameter, length and thread size than the holes in the barrel are currently threaded for. What a nightmare! Then I thought I'd just use the 2 screws from the old sight - wrong! The screw heads are too large to fit the recessed screw-holes in the factory Remington replacement front sight. So I've now got a front sight that I can't mount.
I did cross-reference and made sure that Midway sent me the right screws (or at least the ones I ordered). The little bags they came in are labeled correctly: Rem Front Site Screw Nylon66 552 572
My question is: should I contact a tech at Remington and explain my situation? Is it possible that I ordered the right part, but that Remington changed the screw/thread size since 1969? Is it possible that I was in fact sent the wrong screws? I'm not a gunsmith but thought this relatively simple sight change would go smoothly...
Sorry for the long post - any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff
572 front sight screw question - FRUSTRATED!
Re: 572 front sight screw question - FRUSTRATED!
I think I figured out my problem: Midway USA actually sent me the wrong screws, mis-labeled. It appears as though they sent me (2) Magazine Screws instead of (2) Front Sight Screws. This is evident after I studied the following photos of each one and determined what I had. Now it's on to do battle with customer service . . . ugh.

Re: 572 front sight screw question - FRUSTRATED!
Jeff,
Have you contacted Midway and explained your dilemma? If not, I think that's where I would start.
I just looked at the front sight and screws on my Nylon 66, but I don't have a 552 or 572 in BDL models to compare them.......my 552 and 572 are both the "A" models which use the dovetail front sights.
However, I did use my dial caliper and measured the inside diameter of one of the holes in the front sight where the screw goes in (on my Nylon 66) and it measures .208. Then, I removed one of the screws and it measured .201 across the head. The screw diameter itself appears to be .135.

Edit: Oops......I was measuring and typing and wasn't able to see your post.

Re: 572 front sight screw question - FRUSTRATED!
Thanks Wulfman - I do appreciate your help. I should've done a bit more research before I posted - but it looks like a case of simply the wrong part.
Re: 572 front sight screw question - FRUSTRATED!
Yeah, I forgot to add that the second picture looks like the one I was measuring.
But, I also learned in this thread that the Nylon 66 apparently used the same front sight as the other two in their BDL models.
