Remington 742 6mm Carbine
Remington 742 6mm Carbine
Tonight, I purchased a Remington 742 6mm in pristine condition. All the sources I have available tell me that the 742 was made in a 18 1/2" carbine, but that it was only chambered for 30-06 and 308. My 6mm 742 has an 18 1/2 barrel that appears to be original. The original factory sights are still mounted and the crown seems to be a standard Remington factory crown. In other words, it doesn't appear to be cut. Does anyone know of a 742 being manufactured in a 6mm carbine? Thanks for any replies. DFogleKY@aol.com
Re: Remington 742 6mm Carbine
It does not have a recessed crown. It does not have Carbine stamped on it. I am going to attempt to contact the Remington Co. to see if they may have some info on this. Several of the books I read stated that the 742 was made in a Carbine version only in 308 and 30-06. However, I found another book that stated it was manufactured in 280 as well. Also found a 280 Carbine on Gunbroker. I'm not saying you are incorrect. What you stated could very well be fact and probably is, since it was not stamped. Hopefully Remington will have an answer. Thanks for the reply.
Re: Remington 742 6mm Carbine
I just got off of the phone with Remington about this rifle. No information except for dates of manufacture. Serial number places it between 1978-79 and the barrel code is Dec. 79. They had no more information on this model. Back to square one. Too bad they are not as forthcoming with info as Winchester always was.
