model 12-c date code

Post by hmeziere »

my 12-c is marked on the left of the barrel, near receiver with underlined "j" and what appears to be a "n" underneath. On the right side of the barrel, next to the receiver is either a "m" or "w", depending on how its viewed. It is a octagonal 23-1/2" barrel and curved buttstock. The serial number is 5909xx. Any input on date and year of manufacture is appreciated.

According to Rem records your rifle was made in late 1922 or early 1933. The date code should be on the left side of the barrel and should end in N or P. Sometimes production by serial number got out of order so the dates I gave you may be off by a year or two.

Thank you. Is it odd that the date codes are placed one over the other(underlined j over n)? Or is that the norm? Does the serial # not play into this dating at all?
Thanks again

I see I put 1933 instead of 1923... 1923 is the right year. The serial numbers are a good way to get close on the manufacture date, but the receivers are given numbers then put in bins waiting for assembly. They are not picked out in order. The time of assembly is when the date code is added and is the actual date of manufacture.

The date code should be on one line. It can be above, below or in front of proof and/or testing stamps.
