Help on 20 gauge 870 Wingmaster replacement barrels?

Post by Eric in NC »

I have a 20 gauge 870 Wingmaster that I got in 1981 (barrel code is "CB") - it is in the original configuration. The serial number ends in "X". I see the barrels that say they don't fit "pre 1974 guns with serial numbers ending in X". But a current production barrel won't fit mine even though it is post 1974.

Are there any sources of new barrels for my gun? It is in great shape but it has a 28" full choke and I want to go with a shorter, more open choke (preferably a barrel that accepts rem-chokes).

Thanks

I do not think you will find a RemChoke barrel, as they did not come out until 1987, and I forget the exact year, but I am petty sure they stopped production of the Standard 20 gauge well before then. I think your best bet would be to have your barrel shortened (if that's what you want) and have screw in choke tubes installed if everything else is just the way you want it. I wouldn't go below 26" unless you do not care about the resale value. Due to the relative scarcity of barrels for the Standard weight guns, they command somewhat of a premium, although not nearly as bad as it is with Standard 1100s, because a lot of target shooters want those.
Contact Kyle Orton, or Briley, or the like and they can give you a price. Probably cheaper than another barrel. I have had 4 or 5 barrels done, and if done by a competent party, all the systems, including the thinwall tubes, work fine.
What could have happened... did.
