Model 1861 Army

Post by toniane »

I am seeking information about how to track this gun back to the regiment it was issued to (if possible) for my grandfather before he passes. He has bone cancer and wishes to pass the gun down to my sons to have when they are older. We had a wonderful long talk the other day and he has always been terribly curious how our family came to have it. I can only trace it back to my great-grandfather's uncle in Illinois, and he was not in the military. So if at all possible I want to find out the story of the gun for him. He has tried to find the gun's history himself, but alas he and the internet do not mesh. My father-in-law is an old gunsmith and cast some ammo and cleaned the gun for my grandpa and wrote down all of the markings on the gun but could give no further information on where to look for it's past. Any information to guide my way would be wonderful.

This is what is on the gun:
Manufactured by Remington Ilion - N.Y.
Patented Dec. 17, 1861
Serial Number 9245
Letter S on Brass trigger guard
Letter PS on Barrel and stock

Thank you so much for your time,
Toni Ane
