I have inherited the following gun with not much to go on. I would like to find out the date of manufacture (guessing 1925-1928), correct model number - if 11 is not correct. Not in great shape, but uncle of father-in-law put his hunting lic in the stock - has several dating back to 1928. Any assistance would be appreciated!
Stamped on top of barrel
Remington Arms CO, Inc. Ilion, NY
Browning US patents 689,283-710,084-730,870-812,326
On side of chamber - "The Sportsman"
No graphics or ornamentation
12 Guage automatic with what looks like a modified choke tube
I see two numbers (serial numbers??): barrel - 85704 and gun - 40063
No other serial number as I can tell on the barrel.
Thanks Much!

Re: Remington 11 ??
Sounds like a model 11 to me. Post a picture or search www.gunbroker.com and search model 11 Remington and see if it looks like yours.

"The Sportsman" is the 3 shot version of the model 11 (which is 5 shot). The only difference is the magazine and forearm. However the 3 shot didn't come out until 1931 and your serial numbers don't make much sense. It is possible you have a mix of parts. Where is the safety? Pictures would sure help.
