I had a 721 264 in the middle-late 60s. It's finish on the SS barrel was flaky. The rifle was very accurate, but each shot case had to be extracted with great force. There was a tool ring in he chamber close in front of the belt. Oil wiped on each round in that location would allow extraction. I rebarreled it with a Sako blank in 7 mag. This shot well but feeding was terrible. Rounds popped out of the rails too soon every time. I never got around to feeding when it was 264. The gun was near new with no signs of rail modification. This was one of the few lemon 721,2,5 I ever saw. Dad had a 700 BDL like the OP gun in 7mag. Shot very poorly. Couldn't make it group with any load or even stock work.
I gave up collecting these rifles long ago. I probably had 40 at the top of the collection of 720, 721, 722, and 725. Now only four. An early 50s 308, a transition 3006, a CMP 40x, and an early 50s 3006 made into 280 with a Larry Brace barrel and my fitted Classic stock. Dang nice 280.
My Rems
Re: My Rems
Larry did nice work!!! He is missed...
Re: My Rems
Larry Brace certainly did. This 280 is just a simple re-barrel. But Larry trued the action and all that. And he did the work in exchange for a M70 action I had. I also have two M70 stocks Larry recheckered and cleaned up. These were amongst his very last projects. They will always be very dear to me.
