Date of Manufacturer For 1858 Remington?

Post by danceswithempties »

Good Evening all,
A member from another site directed me here with my question. I recently acquired an '1858 Army', serial number 107487. Can someone please tell me it's date of manufacture?

Hello, your revolver was made in mid 1864.
Does it have any letters stamped on the frame, trigger guard, etc. Also does it have any stamping on the wooden grips. That would be an inspectors cartuche indicating military inspected firearm for use in the civil war.

The letter 'H' is stamped in both the frame & the trigger guard. '01' was also stamped under the left grip as well as the serial number down below it. I do not see any evidence of an inspectors mark on the grips. The serial number on the barrel, although faint matches the frame number. It's not the prettiest one around, but it's my first original & the mechanics are in good working order.

The H is a sub inspectors mark. I bet it was used in the CW. I collect CW weapons both excavated and non excavated. I like my weapons to have a been there and seen hell look. Your gun has that look. I have a excavated Remington from the 1864 battle of Olustee in Florida. its posted on this website and pics of it if your interested. It still has the serial # 41785. Yes they are still visible after 150 yrs in the ground.
