What do I have

Post by Fox Mike »

I posted this when I initially logged into the site but thought perhaps it needed to be here rather than in the "Newbie" section. I inherited a Remington double barreled shotgun and am wondering what year it was built and if there is any chance of finding a butt plate for it. I can find no 'model number' on it anywhere. It appears to have a Damascus type pair of barrels. On both sides of the trigger housing group is says "remington arms co". It has two triggers and no external hammers. The serial numbers that are on the plate that connects the barrels, as well as on the lock/trigger assembly is: 314578. Where the front wooden stock section snaps into place is a number 4809. In the 'hinge' area is the number 4639. Any and all help is appreciated.

Mike, From the description and the serial number, you have a Model 1900 K grade. Made from 1900 to 1910. Yours was made about 1901-02.

Thanks. I didn't know where to post as I didn't know its age. All I did know is that it took many canvasbacks and mallards for my grandfather. This is a link to one just like it. http://www.gunsinternational.com/Reming ... CCDEF94A1D
Thanks again. I do still need the butt plate if anyone knows where to send me.

Actually Frank Mitchell is the name but Fox Mike was a name given me by my Commanding officer years ago. I signed all the 'gig sheets' on aircraft with "FM" which is where the "Fox Mike" came from.

Remington Model 1900s are a simplified, cheaper, version of the Model 1894, built on the same patents -- No. 528,507 and No. 528,508 both granted Oct. 30, 1894. The Model 1900s were all K-Grades, with E added to the designation if the gun had ejectors and D if it had Damascus barrels -- K-, KE-, KD-, or KED-Grades. The K- and KE-Grades had Remington Steel barrels. The Model 1900s had a snap-on/off forearm and their serial numbers were in the 300,000 range, often preceded with a stock letter Q.

There were two styles of butt plates used on Model 1900s. The early guns used the same butt plate as Model 1894s with a a "widow's peak" at the heel and a checkered field with RACo logo in a shield. Later guns used a flat plate with the worde REMINGTON just below the top screw, then horizontal lines, and ARMS CO in an arc below the lower screw. Dutchman Woodworks sells a repro of the early style -- http://www.dutchmanwoodworks.com/buttplat.htm
