760 magazine question

Post by 4570GOVT »

Does anyone know when the magazines for 760's changed from the style with the hole in the side to the solid side? My guess is the mid 1950's but I am trying to find out which year.

I'm not sure whether this will definitively "answer" your question, but I remembered this question being asked before and did a forum Search on it. Here's the link:

That post still stands as the RSA Research Team has not found any additional information in the archives or from chatting with long time employees.

Which style would be correct for a March 1954 270. I have seen articles that indicate the 270 was chambered in 1953(Old style) and others indicated 1954(New Style)?

Caliber .270 Winchester was added to the line in the March 31, 1953 Remington catalog. The magazine with holes was used up to late 1953 or early 1954 when the side hole was dropped and the feed lips were slightly changed. The third version with the vertical side ribs was introduced in mid to late 1954. The dates are only approximate as Remington would use up old stock before switching to the newer design.

Thanks, any thoughts on a source for an early style 270 magazine? I have tried the usual suppliers without success. One "expert" said that they didn't make the 270 magazine with the hole, yet another reason for my previous question.

Richard Pearson of The Clip Joint PO Bx 67, Centerville, PA 16404 helped me a great deal with getting a number of the early magazines shown in my Autoloading & Pump Action book. He has tables at the Syracuse Gun Show and a number of PA shows. Very helpful. A smooth side, no ribs, magazine would also be correct for a March 1954 rifle as the assemblers would use what came to hand in the bin.

I have the same question. My 760 in .270 Win has barrel code K A U serial # 2052XX, which I believe was manufactured in May 1954. It only has one magazine, and I would like to get a few more for the range. Is this considered early, 2nd version, or 3rd version? It has a vertical indentation or rib on each side, & a small hole at the bottom of each end. Attaching pictures for clarification. I realize this is an old post, & might not get seen. Thanks in advance for any help.
