model 41 targetmaster bolt disassembly

Post by mi22ouri »

I have just aquired a mod. 41 targetmaster, the rifle shoots good and is in pretty decent shape for a 72 year old gun.
The problem i'm having is some light strikes and I have to re cock, then it will fire the 2nd time. when I was cleaning the bolt I noticed that the firing pin could move freely just by tipping the bolt back and forth, is this normal ? I thought there should be some spring tension to keep the firing pin retracted in the bolt face until it was struck by the hammer.
Can anyone help me?
I would like to make sure this rifle is up to par, my 13 yr. old boy wants to shoot it in 4-H comp. this year. Thanks,

It is normal for the firing pin to move freely the way you describe. For that reason, I would never carry the rifle with a round chambered, even with the safety on. A drop on the muzzle could, in theory, at least, result in an accidental discharge. I couldn't say why you're getting the misfires, maybe inadequate firing pin protrusion or a too-light mainspring. These are great rifles. Good luck.
