Recently I had purchased a Remington Model 24 .22 LR rifle for a steep price of $300. I have no reason to buy a .22 rifle to begin with since I already own two, however this one had some markings (and lack thereof too) that I could not pass up. I figured I'd be able to find someone that I know that might have an inkling of information on it, however of the sport shooters, researchers, and museum personnel I've contacted, not a single person has a clue as to what these markings signify.
The first engraving is as follows:
M/W BORE & RIFLING DIA.
EXPERIMENTAL
Secondly, the barrel has no date code stamped on it. I've checked where it should be and the metal is untouched.
The wear conditions on the barrel and receiver don't seem to match either, so I'm also speculating that the receiver itself is a surrogate and this is not a "complete set" for lack of a better term. It's also possible that I'm looking way too into this and I might have the greatest forgery known to man.
If anyone has any information on this or knows someone that might, please let me know so I can figure out whether or not I should keep it.
