Remington 1858 question

Post by Rem3129+1 »

I have a Remington model 1858, serial number 3129, 6 1/ inch barrel, medium frame, 36 caliber. With such a low serial number any thoughts on what series this revolver is? the barrel is octagon. Thanks!

Hello,

The term, Model 1858" applies to the New Model Army revolver because it has the 1858 patent date on the barrel. There never was a "model 1858." That it just what people started calling them many years ago because of the patent date.

What you have is a New Model Belt revolver. It an be either a SA, or a DA. They were made first in .36 percussion, later in .38 Colt. 10,000 were made, from 1863 to 1873in total, and both versions were sequentially serial numbered as one model. Current research indicates that about 6000 Single Action were made, with about 4000 Double Action being made.

There is a recently published monograph on this model, and information is still being collected on these pistols. Your info added to the survey will help learn more about these pistols. Please contact me for a list of what info we need. aardqe5@gmail.com

Thank you,
Daniel
