Early civilian rolling blocks

Post by Cwc »

I am interested in learning more about the early (pre-1873) civilian rolling blocks. Would civilians have been mostly getting used military rifles, or were there a lot of rifles sold directly to the civilian market? Do we know how many civilian guns were full stock and how many were sporting models?

I am trying to get my hands on a copy of Marcot’s book to help answer my questions. Until then, thanks for putting up with my questions!

I only collect Remington Sporting Rifles in Rolling Block and Hepburn models. Early Rolling Block Sporting Rifles have always been extremely tough to find as Remington directed almost all of their efforts towards filling government contracts all over the world. I own just one Rolling Block Sporter and rarely see any others offered in the early style.
There are no records to source, so how many is unknown. The early Sporters have a very unique forearm cap that's not as stylized as later are, and some have a little different buttplate also. Actions were usually just like the military with round tops unlike later with octagon top actions.
