44-90 Remington Special Necked

44-90 Remington Special Necked

So... the 44-90 Remington Special Necked takes a .442 sized bullet, and I just happen to have a .442 H&I sizing die. Buddy has 200 new (old stock) primed 44-90 Remington Special Necked cases. We have molds that will work as well.

This caliber was made on a Rolling Block for Buffalo back circa 1870s

With the above - Anyone?!?...
Chamber Reamer in 44-90 Remington Special Necked?
Dies?
And what about a rifle chambered in 44-90 Remington Special Necked? Or even a RB bbl chambered in 44-90 Remington Special Necked?

Never seen a Remington .44-90 with a groove diameter that took a .442" bullet? Have you slugged the bore, or is this a new barrel you purchased to build up the gun?
Both my .44-90 BN and .44-77 BN rifles with original barrels and bores have groove diameters of .452" and use a .446" bullet with two wraps of paper to make them .452" diameter. If I shoot them with grease groove bullets I cast .452" bullets for them.

The .442 sizing is based off literature - not an actual barrel/grooves/slugged. We have new Remington primed cases and I have a .442 factory sizing dies. Lit says 44-90 Remington Special Necked with .442 bullet. Never thought about it being a paper patch! Could be... Regardless, would be a gun(s) we build, and as such, could basically choose the diameter we want. We have .439 and .446 molds and sizers, and the .442 sizer. The .446 bullet would size to .442 and work. Right now this is just components begging for a gun - AND would be a project!

Unless you know a barrel maker who will do a custom size groove diameter there's not much chance you'd find a barrel in that bullet diameter. But there's also no reason to make something in a non typical groove diameter either, and forever be stuck sizing bullets to an oddball size.
Not sure where your reference came from, but Cartridges of the World shows the .44-90 as a .446" bullet, and as I mentioned that would take two wraps of paper to become the typical .452" grease groove cast bullet. But there are barrel makers these days selling barrels with a .446" groove diameter so you can shoot a bullet that size without paper patching.
Whose dies are you using, or did you have something custom made to that small size?
