Remington 552 chambering problem

Post by dhenzler »

Bought a 552, and it was Filthy but functioned well. I had a tough time getting the barrel out. Took it to Miller's Gun in Jacksonville NC to have him remove it without damaging anything. Then brought it home to clean. Four hours later I had it looking pretty again. Reassembled using a Youtube Video as a guide. But it fails to chamber the cartridge.

As can be seen the cartridge didn't enter the loading port at an angle sufficient to put the nose in the right place.

Resulting in one heck of a jam.

Have any of you experienced this... What did I do wrong ?

Took the trigger group out and inspected it. Found nothing obvious. Reassembled and fire tested it. Now it loads ok, but the trigger isn't resetting. It's a single shot ! Obviously there is something interfering with the trigger mechanism... which is very clean. All the levers move freely and there is no sign of grit, no stuck parts...

Anyone have any ideas ?

The failure to cycle was caused by the trigger not resetting. I installed a 3lb spring and everything resumed operating properly.
This is not the rule, but an exception to the 2lb spring being perfect for ALL 552's. Trigger mechanisms are made in different years and although perhaps made from the same parts, slight differences likely exist. The 2lb spring felt rather light when I put it in with my fingers.

Problem resolved...
