1894 With Strange S/N ???

This just came in, can't really figure it out. My guess is a Model 1894 "A" Grade. It's the s/n that throws me off, # on receiver is 312351, parts appear to be double marked 2351 & 2381 ??? Normal ? Also, any idea when built ? S/N's I see dated have prefixes.

Your Remington is a Model 1900 KED grade built in 1901. !894s S/Ns start with 1 while 1900s start with 3.

The K grade was offered in four versions:

K - Remington steel barrels with extractors
KE - as above with ejectors
KD - Damascus barrels with extractors
KED - as above with ejectors

According to the pellet stamp on the barrel lug (30 & 40) both barrels are IM choke.

A bit more information to add to that stated above. The lower priced (slightly simplified?) Remington Hammerless Double Barrel Gun built on the same Oct. 30th, 1894, patents as the A- to EEO-grades (aka Model 1894s), was introduced in K-Grade, Remington Steel barrels and plain extractor, with an insert in some of the 1899 Remington Arms Co. catalogs. To date no Remington Arms Co. catalog dated 1900 has surfaced. In the first 1901 catalog the K-Grade is shown on page 7 --

and the KED-Grade, two-stripe Damascus barrels and automatic ejectors, shown on page 6 was said to be ready for delivery about July 1, 1901 --

The KD-Grade first appears in the 1903-04 Remington Arms Co. catalog and the line was finally filled out with the KE-Grade added in the first 1906 catalog.

The serial number of the gun in question is 312351 and several pieces of the gun are stamped with the last four of the serial number 2351. The other four-digit number, in this case 2381, is called by many an assembly number. I doubt anyone still alive really knows what that number means. I thought it might be an assembly number, but odd how it is so close to the serial number.
