Hello Ou812ic,

You didn't give us enough info to give you a date. If it is an Army model - 44cal, then it is a Beals Army Model and was made in Oct of 1862. If it is a Navy Model - 36 cal, then it is a Beals Navy Model, and was made in Nov 1861 Are you sure that it is a full size revolver? It might be a Belt Model, or a Police Model, and they were made in, or after 1863. No mater which model, there will also be a serial number on the trigger guard tab. Only one screw and very easy to remove.

Thank you for the information! It is full size, .44 caliber all matching serial numbers. Army model, has 2 threaded holes in the grip frame, one low to mid of the backstrap and another on the bottom. Buttstock attachment points? It's in excellent mechanical condition, perfect bores.

I have another new model serial # 112135, .44 cal full size also. I don't know why information about these things is so hard to find. I appreciate the help!

Hello Ou812ic,

Hello Ou812ic,

Your pistol, #4798 is a real mystery. It is a New Model Army, but the serial number is in the range of the 1861, or Elliot Model. It was made in Oct. 1862 and NMA production started in 1863. Remington put the serial number on the left, bottom, grip frame, the underside of the barrel, and on the tab of the trigger guard. The only time that the number is on the inside of the grips is when the grips were fitted to that particular revolver. The gun looks like a re-blue, and it has a blade front sight, but the NMA never had a blade front sight. The two bottom lines of the barrel marking is stamped very deeply in contrast to the "normal" stamp of the top line. It just doesn't look right, but it may be. It does have inspectors' marks on the major parts, and the cartouche appears to be OWA, for O. W. Ainsworth.

Your NMA #112135 was made in Oct. 1864.

I have a navy 1858 .36 cal with a strange stamping on the bottom of the barrel after the serial number. I have looked in Ware's book about it but I'm not seeing any information. See what you think of it. Picture attached.

A picture of the pistol as I found it 100% functional with a good bore. I can get more pictures of it if it would help.

Hello again Ou812ic,

Your Navy Model is a Beals Model, made in July 1862. not a New Model Navy. This serial should be at the end of the Beals Model production and very close to the start of the Model 1861, or Elliot Model. photo of the top barrel marking would help.

The unusual markings are stamped deep, and I can't make out what they are. Usually Remington marked conversions, or factory repaired pistols in this location. Is this mark also stamped on the left bottom of the grip frame? This pistol doesn't appear to be a conversion. If it has any inspector's marks, or a cartouche on the left bottom grip, it could be a rare, martially marked Beals.
