Remington Smoot #2

Post by bushpilotmexico »

My Remington arrived today and looks to be in decent shape. Serial number is 928 stamped 1873 on the barrel. I guess no way to get an actual manufacturing date? Bore looks decent clear lands and grooves with some black powder pitting here and there but nothing serious.

You have there a nice gun in good condition !

I also own a #2 Smoot revolver that is engraved ans has ivory grips, serial 826. The antique arms dealer who sold it to me and is welle renowned in Europe assured me that the engraving was factory done.

There is a book writtten by Harry J. Parker, Ora Lee Parker and Joan S. Reisch, titled "A Study of Remington's Smoot Patent & Number Four Revolvers". In this book , it is said that between serial 801 and 1000, there were only 2 engraved #2 produced and that only one of those had ivory grips. So, apparently, it was mine.

Here is my gun :

Your gun is magnificent and truly one of a kind. I have ordered the book that you mention and looking forward to getting it. It might give me an idea as to when, possibly, the gun would have been manufactured.

This little book is really very interesting but it won't give you the year of manufacture of your gun, this being due to the loss of Remington archives. All that is known about the #2 Smoot revolver is that it was manufactured from 1877 to 1885 or 1888 depending on the sources, with around 3,000 units produced.

It's important to say that the Smoot #1 and #2 models are very special guns that would deserve to be much better known, since they are the only revolvers ever produced with the barrel and frame machined in a single piece of steel !

After that, Remington realized that the machining cost was way too high and the material waste too important, and that's why they went back to the more traditional barrel screwed into the frame for theyr #3 model.
