Shotgun Butt Stock contours 870, 1100, 1187 etc

Post by dhenzler »

I have supercell recoil pads and need to know when the stock contour changed. I believe somewhere around 1980. Can anyone confirm this. I know some of the early models had thinner taller butstock wood...

Virginian... are you out there ?

Remington changed the checkering style but not the basic stock contours in 1979. Then in 1987 with the 11-87, they started introducing a different stock finish. Throughout the 90s they started making changes to various models. They tried to kill off the 1100, unsuccessfully. They started with different recoil pad contours and types sometime around the new millennium, I don't recall exactly when the Supercell came along.
Remington ALWAYS had some variability in their wood stock shapes. I have never seen a preshaped recoil pad fit perfectly except on some laminated stocks. I always advise to measure and then get a grind to fit pas that's close.
What could have happened... did.

I pulled a couple stock photos and overlaid them. Clearly the old darker stock is taller...

Difficult to get precise with overlay, but this shows the difference in height of pad. As well the older ones are narrower.

Perhaps there is someone who actually owns one of each...
