Help! - Remington 1858 .44

Post by USNA85 »

I need y'alls help!

I am about to buy a Remington 1858 .44 cal with the serial number 28306. However, it is highly engraved and I am not sure that it is really a Remington!

Can anyone look at this and give me their thoughts?

Hi USNA85,

It's impossible to tell from just one photo. To even have any idea would take several, good quality photos. The first thought is that no engraved, embellished Remmy would have plain wood grips. The front sight appears to be the pinched type, which wouldn't be on an early NMA. If the gun is original, the engraving may be modern, and the bison is probably modern. The serial number is located on the bottom of the barrel, the lower, left grip frame, and the trigger guard tab. If original, the serial dates it to July 1863, an early New Model Army. If the gun is original, the modern engraving and refinish has destroyed the collector value.
