870 Age Question

Post by scottjc »

Hello, I recently acquired a 16 ga. 870 with a plain 28" modified barrel. The barrel markings on the left side are S B 60. I can't make that combination of letters work with the commonly published aging chart. The serial number is S012529W. This is a Remington barrel, but I have no way of knowing if it is original to the gun. I know someone here will have the answer.

The serial number correlates to 68 to 74 manufacture. The barrel code is meaningless, as you noted it does not match with anything charted. I would guess 1968 based on serial number.
Not having a valid, or indeed any, date code is not unusual. I have three Remington barrels with no date code. I did have four, and two come new on the guns.
What could have happened... did.
