"B" marked military rolling block barrel bands

Post by Rob44Cheney »

What is the meaning of the capital letter B stamped into the side of all three barrel bands of an Egyptian first contract black powder rolling block military rifle? Of all the markings often found on the Egyptian contract rifles, I've never seen this before. Beyond the top tang Remington ID and patent information, these are the only marks found on the rifle. Can anyone help?

If it has no other clearly Egyptian markings then it may be a French contract rifle, 1870-1.

Thanks for yoour reply, Ed. There are no other marks so I will assume that the rifle is a French contract piece. Thanks again for your response.
