Forum activity

Post by 54bullseye »

Hi John Taylor here "54bullseye" Just wondering where are all the members ?? Seems like no interest in the forum ?? I joined the Remington Society back in 2011 hoping to be in contact with fellow Remington enthusiast to talk over the age, the grade of rifles and different features of rifles and since my early posts I have never had much response ??? Seems like there are only a few guys mostly administration that ever respond and those responses are usually very brief ?? Lately I have made some posts about different rifles I own and NOTHING ??

Is it just nobody is looking at the forum or is the stuff I have posted including pictures just not interesting to other members ?? I am really disappointed in the participation and would like to help change it but I have no idea how to do it ?? I also collect vintage Big Game Fishing Tackle and the different forums see much more activity !!! Even other gun forums are far more busy !!

I love the Remington Journal and the many books that members have written also most Remington guns in general !! I have gone back to day one in the "Post 1898 rifle section" and only found a hand full of posts that truly had a lot of responses the one that really jumped out was on engraved rifles and Eugene Myskowski seemed to go out of his way to answer questions he seems to be a great guy who is truly a Remington enthusiast !!

Are there other gun forums out there that Remington collectors frequent ??? Where do I find other active Remington rifle collectors ?? Thanks for listening !! John Taylor

PS I wonder if a small reminder about the forum in the Remington Journal might help to gain more interest ?? Just a thought. Please let me know if there might be anything I could do to help.

John!

Your point is well taken and I try to respond to any subject for which I have "actual" knowledge. It would appear that most of the postings are "one-time" things where people are looking for information on a specific rifle and/or have purchased/inherited a rifle that has problems.

I respond mostly to inquiries on the Model 14/14-1/2/141 because that's where the bulk of my knowledge lies. I get a lot of direct inquiries because I gave my email address out some time back. I get 2-3 emails a week mostly because folks have purchased something from a website, thought it was cool, and then found out its total crap.

The "forum" is now a "quest" for information/help rather than social discourse. The ironic thing about that is after I solve or fix a problem rifle, the owner then feels the need to share way too many details of his personal collection. I'm sort of on the other side of your observation in that I'm only interested in solving whatever problem they offer up and could care less about what they have in their collection.

The "forum" serves a useful purpose directing those in need of help to those of us who can provide it, the problem with that is those of us providing it are getting on in age. When those of us who are in our 80's are gone, a wealth of information will leave with us, and so I say keep those vintage copies of "The Journal, The Rifleman, Old Gun Catalogs for future reference. Some of these old publications can be found on Ebay but the information in them is not readily available on the internet since its not politics or porn.

Kindest regards

The circumstances of how I happened to be on the forum was that I saw a reference to a book authored by John Gyde and Roy Marcot and did some searching.....and found this forum. Since I have a "fair number" of firearms including quite a few Remingtons, I decided to hang around and further my education. Like Jim, I try to answer whatever questions in categories I feel comfortable in responding to. But, I've never thought of it as a place to "chat" or brag about what I have. I have what I have and that's it. Some of it is "interesting" but not in the "WOW" category. Just the ones that I had in my youth and/or found and acquired in shops or acquired from people I've known over the decades. I also have a number of black powder arms. I have been a reloader since the late 1960s. Shot trap and skeet in the distant past and was a member of the ATA. I've been a Life Member of the NRA since the early 1970s. In other words I have a fairly wide range of interests but age and some health issues have limited my activity in many areas. I have quite a few "collections" (more like accumulations) and in recent years have been adding to my interests in fishing gear......(looking for decent quality at affordable costs).

Well first I want to than both Jim and Den for the in depth responses to my post ! I really appreciate and understand what both of you are saying and I guess maybe I am looking for more out of the forum than I should be. I guess what I am kind of looking for is not only a place to find information on different guns but a place collectors can share pictures and information on there collections ! I have been collecting all sorts of guns since my grandfather gave me an old model 11 shotgun as a kid. As I grew up and did a lot of hunting and shooting and started to buy more guns but I never seemed to get rid of any LOL !! I am now in my mid 60s and very much enjoy collecting and my collection is mostly Remington.

I have many friends that hunt and own guns and a few that collect various guns but what I don't have is anyone close by who has the Remington bug I have so no one to share my interest ! I guess that is more what I am looking for. And just so you know I am not bragging about what I have I am posting guns that I am proud to own and hoping that people with similar guns will share those with me ! I love to take them apart and find different markings that are hidden and to compare my finds with others ! That's how you learn !

Jim mentioned how we are getting up there in age and how a wealth of knowledge will disappear when were gone and that is true so to me sharing what you know and have now is important so I think a bit of show and tell is a great way to share the knowledge while we are here ! From watching the prices on good Remington's on Gunbroker and other auction sites there is still a lot of interest out there for vintage firearms and I have spoken to younger people who do have the interest for older Remington's so there is hope !!

Thanks again for the two of you getting back to me !! I watch the forum so if something comes up that I think I can help with I will jump in.

How do you all think I feel? I’m only a 49 year old pup but have been collecting 14’s,141’s,8’s and 81’s for over 20 years! Currently only one model 8 and one 81, but three 141’s and a lone 14. Nobody my age has any interest in my old stuff. Even the older people at my gun club usually have never heard of the 14 or 141, much less seen one. I don’t know how many times I’ve had to explain what a 30 or 32 Rem is. Most people have heard of the 35 Rem, largely because of the Marlin 336.

These rifles fascinate me to no end. I so enjoy getting another one, disassembling it, cleaning decades of dirt out, and getting them back to the range. Even hunt with them from time to time.

I handload for all 3 calibers and have a substantial hoard of brass, especially for the 30 Rem. I have 4 of those beasts to feed! And about 300 rounds of original factory ammo from the 50’s to the 90’s. Very rarely shoot that stuff. Saving it for a rainy day!

Anyway, I’m in the same boat as you all. I try to educate anybody who will listen about these old Remingtons, hopefully I’ve sparked interest for somebody.

Mike I feel your pain !! Lol !! I guess this forum is more for technical problems and trouble shooting problems with your guns. There are some guys here that know 141s, 14s and 8s and 81s pretty well so any issues they will jump in but as far as showing your collection or comparing your guns with others and discussion about them I think this isn't the place ! I have posted quite a few pictures of some of my favorites in hopes to maybe start some discussion and have had almost no replies.
Good luck ! John Taylor

I feel the forum is more about quality than quantity. Not a bunch of people with little knowledge posting. I have learned a lot from the forum, and appreciate the input of the small group of true experts on these guns that do post regularly. As pointed out, there are not many people left with significant knowledge of these very complex guns. I am really pleased to have acquired a rifle out of the collection of one of these experts, Jim Peterson. Thanks to Jim and all those that do share their knowledge on this forum! Ron, a Lurker.

John, I say post away! I am very much in your camp! I too received a Model 11 from my grandpa when I was 13. It was his dads! (It was made in 1910, btw). I also enjoy pics of peoples collections and talking about the minuscule details, especially on hand loading for the 30 and 32 Rem cartridges. This is the only type of “social media” im on . No FB, twitter or any of that other garbage. Technical help is always appreciated, but good people talking old rifles sharing knowledge, stories, and experiences is priceless.

So, John, I check this sight weekly and if you post a pic of a recently acquired treasure, I’ll gladly post a reply!

As another old fart I agree that far too often we do lose a wealth of knowledge as each elder passes from the green side of the grass. And I've had many years of enjoyment from Remington firearms, handguns, rifles and shotguns.

Fortunately for all of you I really don't have a wealth of knowledge so when I am no longer on the green side of the grass very little will have been lost. I come here though to try to learn a little so it's read often, write seldom.

But mainly I see the biggest loss of knowledge has been the changes to Remington itself. It seems near impossible to get information on a particular firearm. For example, I've always wondered about the polychoke on my 48 Sportsman. It really looks to be original but since it was a hand me down many many decades ago and the original owner or owners long gone to the other side of the grass there can only be speculation.

Support for the aftermarket origin is the fact that the barrel in marked as FULL, but I've never been able to find any reference to show that Remington marked the barrels that were factory poly differently than the other choke options.

With S&W and Colt I've been able to get information on handguns going back to the very early 1900 listing exactly what features were from the factory and even to whom the handgun was originally shipped. There's no such ability though when it comes to Remington firearms. It's only through sites such as this one that we have any reasonable possibility of learning at least general knowledge if not the specifics of an individual firearm.

hello forum viewers,

How is this for a late reply?

I can give a short reply on the factory info for handguns. there isn't any! How's that for short and sweet? What happened is that E Remington & Sons had lots of records stored in a storage facility in NYC. ER&S went bankrupt and was sold in 1888. Some time around th1900, a bean counter discovered that the "new" Remington Arms was making annual payments to this storage facility. When it was discovered that the only thing in storage was "old records" the company stopped the annual payments. And the rest is history, or the lack of it. Today we have no idea what records were lost, just that there aren't any records. : (

Everyone posting here, have a very Merry Christmas, and a very Happy New Year ! And may all of you find a Reminton of your desires under the tree.
Daniel
