#2 Sporting rifle in .32-20

Post by 1srelluc »

I picked-up a #2 in .32-20 today. I have $450.00 in it. it has near a 25" barrel. Standard sights. Nothing special.

There's no finish left except under the wood but the bore is very good. No wood cracks.

I guess it would be a "modern" #2 given the Remington Arms Co. rollmark and the forend construction.

LOL....I'm a huge sucker for the .32-20 cartridge and the more elegant frame sizes most vintage rifles used for it. In the past year I've picked-up a Colt lightning Magazine Rife, a M1873 Winchester, and now the #2, all in .32-20.

I've had a couple #1s over the years in obsolete calibers that I parted with.

I still have a Danish RB that was reamed to .45-70 when it was imported and a Rem. Conversion Musket in .58 Berdan/US Musket.

I have always liked RBs so finding one in .32-20 was a especially good find for me.

Question: Does anyone have a pic of a factory #2 tang sight? Also what is the factory hole thread-pitch?

I think I know where one might be (it has a curved base) if it is like this one one.

I know that there is a Marbles Simplex there too.

I don't recall the tang sight thread pitch at the moment, but Sam Simmons makes the tang sight screws. I've got several sets from him. His email is hoxycarman@hotmail.com

BTW. I too have a Transformed rifle. Mine is in .58 Roberts. Its a lot of fun to shoot and always gets attention at the range.

Tang sight holes for the #2 are 10-32 NF. The tang sight spacing is 1.937" and a sight for a #2 is very rare and tough to find as the base is curved to fit the curved upper tang.
I have adapted other bases to them by bending the base to fit, and elongating the rear hole to still fit the spacing. But I've only done so to an aftermarket sight base as I'd never modify an original Remington sight.
There are numerous styles of tang sights that would be correct for a #2, and they vary from the simple Lyman or Marbles tang sights, to a graduated peep, or vernier tang sight. But all of them will be extremely rare with the curved base for a #2.
Your picture above is of the graduated peep tang sight.

FYI - The Lyman RA and Marbles R2 are the aftermarket tang sights for the #2 rifle.
