Improperly marked 870?

Post by Hunter_W »

I just purchased a used 28" 870 Wingmaster, and in the process of trying to date it came across something odd. There are no date markings, or markings of any sort for that matter, on the left side of the barrel. What's odd though is that on the right side where the Magaflux and proof marks are, there is an odd D stamp that seems to be completely out of place. It's a V prefix gun, so I know it was made '78-'83. My only theory is that whoever was doing the date stamping had a bit of a snafu and started to stamp the date on the wrong side, realized his mistake, and just sent it out the door. My other theory, which to me seems less likely is that it got a replacement barrel in the '99-'01 window where they didn't stamp dates that also happened to have an odd marking on it. I thought someone on here might be able to help shed some light on it, thanks in advance.

Any and all possibilities are real. I have three Remington shotgun barrels with no date coding and I did have 5; 3 came on the guns from the factory.
My theory is that when the rollmarking person went on break, vacation, or was out sick the rest of the line kept right on rolling.
I do not think that is a Remington manufactured barrel.
What could have happened... did.
