1875 Remington 45

Post by Cloverleaf »

I have been told that the 45 cal has a longer cylinder than the 44 ca ( and a longer frame window)
True?

Hi Cloverleaf,

Have you found a 75-45? Yes, true that the cylinder on a 45 is longer, but only by a few hundredths of an inch. The frame window was machined at both the front and rear to make room for the longer cylinder. The changes are so slight that you need a caliper to tell the difference. A 44-40 cylinder will fit into a 45 frame, but not the reverse.

It is believed that less than 2,000 75s are in 45. The first 1,000 were conversions of 44 Rem revolvers for a Mexican contract. They will have the letter "L" on the rear cylinder face to indicate long. Those made as 45s will have a "45" on the rear face of the cylinder. However there is one outlier to this, so it may not be 100% correct.

They were advertised as being in "45 Govt., and take the 45 colt". The 45 Gov may be the 45 Schofield, or it may be the actual 45 Gov, which is the same case length as the Schofield, but with the smaller rim dia. of the Colt. The dirty little secret is that the cylinders are bored through with a very slight taper, so all the 45 cartridges will fit.

Some of the last 75s were made with 5 3/4" barrels. It is believed that all, or almost all of the "short" 75s are in 45.If you have, or come across a 75-45, please send the info: serial, finish, bbl length, and any markings to Bill T. He collects that info.
