Nickel

Did Remington offer a nickel frame and forend release on any of their hammer equipped double shotguns?

Short answer is no. I'm not aware of any reference to nickel plating in the literature. However, Remington would build to customers special order so it's possible but very unlikely. You may be able to tell if it's original by checking whether or not the metal has been refinished.

Pics Model 1889.
Grade 2 gun, serialized in 1900.
Hammers and trigger bow have not been polished/plated.
Wear and chipping look similar to finish on some full nickel and nickel trimmings Winchester guns that I have had the opportunity to examine first hand over the years.
May be wrong but in the first pic it sure looks like wear on nickel plating.
Just wondering what the experts think.

Can’t help with the finish but that’s a beautiful shotgun

Looking at the 1899 Remington Arms Co. catalog I see no mention of nickel-plating for their shotguns, but nickel-plating was an option for the Double Derringer and the single-shot rifles No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5. To date a 1900 Remington Arms Co. catalog has not come to light. Both of the 1901 Remington Arms Co. catalogs offer the nickel-plating on the derringer and various rifles.

Did Remington subcontract the color case processing? If so they might very well have sourced the nickel plating. With the competition for sales at the time it would seem likely that they would cater to the customers wishes.

IMHO... not sure why it's not clearer when I researched but Nickel didn't show up until the late 1860's and anything prior and didn't show up in Remington until early 1870's. If I see anything that was made before 1870 I'm very suspect.
I have however seen things like the ZigZag a few in Nickel but it's clear that the Elliot came out very quickly behind, was better, cheaper, and parts sat on the shelf for a very very long time. I believe they were assembled slowly for 10 years. Of the several Nickel Zig's (that appear original) they have quite high serial numbers.

My 2 cents.

An RSA member, who works for Remington, found some paperwork a few years ago which shows that Remington got it's first vat for nickel plating in 1870. Before that, Remington sourced out the plating. As the admin said, many guns sat around for years and were nickeled long after they were made.
